Ok i brought a ipod touch and it wont show up in my itunes plz hlp?

theres nothing wrong with the usb because i use the same one on my ipod nano and it works. all i just want is to send music on the ipod touch. iv tryed everything restarting the ipod unistall itunes ive even went to apple store and he connected to his computer and it was working. the computer im using is dell windows xp im really sad because the ipod was a present for someone a suprise but now i dont know what to do. plz can someone hlp me please.
