uming we are all the same, why do we try so hard to become our own individual?

There are some philosophers and psychologists that have written about the collective unconscious (Eckhart and Jung) and how no one is an individual and that we are all connected and all the same. So, why do we strive to become so individually apart from each other? I will point out, however, that some of us want to be more individual than others... for example, I usually won't listen to music that everyone else listens to just because it's popular. I will go out and look for particular music specifically because the majority has NOT heard it before. Am I still the same as everyone else?
