I think you'll find your answer in the Herald's lines (110-114 in that scene) that invite "any man of quality or degree," that is, any man of noble rank, to do combat with Edmund. When Edgar enters to answer the challenge, the Herald asks him, "your quality?" and Edgar replies that he is "noble as the adversary." In other words, he declares that he is Edmund's equal in rank or social status.
