Did moderator Chris Matthews try to end the Thompson run for President with one question?

Matthews had a question directed at Thompson at the close of the debate. He asked what he thought of America's relationship with Canada (now there is a lame question if I ever heard of one), but, then parenthetically asked Thompson to name whom the PM of Canada was. I thought it was a question purely intended to wreck Thompson's run, what do you think? By the way, Thompson conjured up the Canadians pm name correctly...
